Proverbs 16:11-13 (ESV)

11 A just balance and scales are the LORD’s;
all the weights in the bag are his work.
12 It is an abomination to kings to do evil,
for the throne is established by righteousness.
13 Righteous lips are the delight of a king,
and he loves him who speaks what is right.

In Solomon’s day, merchants commonly weighed goods using a balance beam with a shallow pan suspended from each end. The item being purchased was placed in one pan, while carefully measured stone or metal weights were placed in the other until the beam rested perfectly level. An honest merchant used accurate weights, but a dishonest one could secretly use lighter or heavier weights to cheat his customers. God condemned such deception. “All the weights in the bag are his work” reminds us that the standard of justice belongs to the Lord, not to man. Because God himself is perfectly just, he expects his people to deal honestly and fairly in every transaction.

Solomon then turns from the marketplace to the palace. “It is an abomination to kings to do evil, for the throne is established by righteousness.” God expects those in positions of authority to govern with justice because they are accountable to him. A ruler who uses his authority for selfish gain opposes God’s moral order and ultimately weakens his own kingdom. In contrast, the king who rules according to God’s wisdom strengthens his throne. Lasting leadership is established not by power or wealth, but by righteousness.

Verse 13 continues, “Righteous lips are the delight of a king, and he loves him who speaks what is right.” Good kings valued counselors who spoke truth rather than flattery. A ruler cannot govern wisely if those around him twist the facts to gain favor. Likewise, a godly woman should be known for truthful speech. She speaks with integrity, resists the temptation to flatter or manipulate, and knows when the right word should be spoken.

Whether at home, at work, or in the church, people value those whose words can be trusted. Our culture often encourages us to exaggerate, spin the facts, or tell people only what they want to hear. God calls his people to something far better. As Paul writes, “Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor” (Ephesians 4:25). God is truth, and he expects those who belong to him to be characterized by truthfulness as well.

Honesty is not always easy. Speaking truth may require admitting you were wrong, delivering difficult news, or refusing to compromise your convictions to gain approval. Yet God delights in those who walk in integrity. Ask him today to guard your lips from deceit and give you both the courage to speak the truth and the wisdom to know the right time to say it. A trustworthy woman brings honor to the Lord and becomes a blessing to everyone around her.
