Proverbs 21:1–3 (ESV)
1 The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD;
he turns it wherever he will.
2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes,
but the LORD weighs the heart.
3 To do righteousness and justice
is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.
The king was the most powerful person in Israel. Humanly speaking, no one possessed greater authority or greater freedom to carry out his own desires. Yet Solomon reminds us that even the king’s heart is under the Lord’s sovereign control. Just as a farmer digs channels to direct life giving water exactly where he wants it to flow, so the Lord directs the hearts of rulers to accomplish his perfect purposes. No human authority is independent of God’s sovereign will.
That truth should humble every one of us. If even the king’s heart is in God’s hands, how much more are ours? Solomon observes that “every way of a man is right in his own eyes.” We naturally justify our decisions, excuse our sin, and assume our motives are pure. But while we evaluate ourselves by outward appearances, the Lord weighs the heart. He alone knows every thought, every motive, and every desire that lies beneath our actions.
Because God sees the heart, he desires more than outward religion. “To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.” Sacrifices were good and commanded by God, but they were never meant to replace genuine obedience. The Lord is not impressed by religious activity that masks an unrepentant heart. He delights in women whose outward worship flows from inward trust and obedience.
Take an honest look at your life beneath the surface today. Is your service to God flowing from a heart that truly loves him, or are you simply going through familiar motions? Remember that the God who weighs your heart also has the power to change it. Ask him to expose any hidden pride, selfish ambition, or divided loyalty, and to produce in you a heart that delights in doing what is right.
Nothing is more encouraging than knowing that the God who examines our hearts is also the God who rules over them. He is able to redirect your desires, rewire your thinking, and cause you to walk in joyful obedience. Submit yourself to him today, trusting that the One who directs the heart of a king is more than able to direct yours as well.
