Proverbs 16:8-10 (ESV)
8 Better is a little with righteousness
than great revenues with injustice.
9 The heart of man plans his way,
but the LORD establishes his steps.
10 An oracle is on the lips of a king;
his mouth does not sin in judgment.
Solomon reminds us that true wealth is not measured by the size of a bank account but by the condition of the heart. “Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues with injustice.” The woman who fears the Lord may never possess great earthly riches, but because she belongs to Christ, she already possesses the greatest treasure of all. Godliness produces a contentment that money can never buy. It is far better to live righteously with little than to enjoy temporary wealth gained apart from God.
Verse 8 also reminds us that financial prosperity is not necessarily evidence of God’s approval. The wicked often enjoy “great revenues with injustice.” For a time, God permits those who reject him to prosper, but their success is temporary. Psalm 37 reminds us that “better is the little that the righteous has than the abundance of many wicked,” because the prosperity of the ungodly will not last. Earthly riches quickly fade, but the inheritance God has prepared for his people is eternal.
Next Solomon turns to God’s sovereign rule over our lives. “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” We make plans, set goals, and move forward believing we are in control. Yet every step ultimately falls under God’s providential care. He directs, redirects, and overrules according to his perfect will. Our responsibility is to make wise plans that honor him while humbly submitting every one of them to his sovereign purposes, knowing that apart from him all our plans are futile.
Finally, Solomon says, “An oracle is on the lips of a king.” The Hebrew word translated “oracle” is qesem. It refers to a divine decision or authoritative verdict. The ideal king was to render righteous judgments that reflected God’s justice, showing no favoritism and refusing corruption. His decisions were to uphold truth because he ruled as God’s appointed representative over the people.
Every earthly king has failed to judge with perfect righteousness, but there is one King who never has. The Lord Jesus Christ always spoke truth, always judged rightly, and always did the will of his Father. One day he will return to establish his eternal kingdom, where righteousness and justice will reign forever. Until that day, joyfully submit yourself to your flawless King. Because he rules perfectly, you can trust every step he ordains for your life.
