Proverbs 20:26–28 (ESV)

26 A wise king winnows the wicked
and drives the wheel over them.
27 The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD,
searching all his innermost parts.
28 Steadfast love and faithfulness preserve the king,
and by steadfast love his throne is upheld.

A wise king does not ignore evil. Solomon returns to the picture of a righteous ruler separating the wicked from the righteous. Just as a farmer winnows grain by tossing it into the air so the wind carries away the worthless chaff while the good grain remains, the king is entrusted with carefully distinguishing those who practice evil from those who do what is right. God entrusts those in authority with the responsibility of protecting the innocent and upholding justice.

Solomon then adds another picture from the harvest. After the grain had been gathered, a heavy threshing wheel was rolled repeatedly over it to separate the kernels from the husks. In the same way, the wise ruler does not merely recognize evil. He acts against it. When justice requires it, he removes the wicked from his kingdom so that righteousness and peace may flourish.

The next proverb reminds us that, unlike even the wisest king, God sees far beyond outward actions. “The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord.” The breath of life that God gave us at creation belongs to him. Like a lamp shining into every hidden corner of a house, he searches every part of our being. Nothing is concealed from his sight. Every thought, every motive, every desire, and every intention of the heart lies fully exposed before him.

The final proverb explains what preserves a king. Although a wise ruler must judge evil, he must also govern with steadfast love and faithfulness. Justice alone cannot sustain a kingdom. A throne is established when a king faithfully cares for his people, keeps his word, and exercises his authority with integrity. These qualities reflect the very character of God and bring stability to his rule.

The God who searches your innermost being already knows your heart completely. It is easy to imagine that if your circumstances were different, you would be more faithful, more obedient, or more useful to him. But the Lord already knows exactly how you would respond in every situation. Nothing about you surprises him. He has placed you exactly where you are today for a very good reason. Rather than longing for a different life, faithfully obey him in the one he has wisely given you.
