Proverbs 20:24–25 (ESV)
24 A man’s steps are from the LORD;
how then can man understand his way?
25 It is a snare to say rashly, “It is holy,”
and to reflect only after making vows.
Solomon reminds us that God is sovereign over every human life. “A man’s steps are from the Lord.” Although people make plans and move in the direction they choose, God retains ultimate authority over every step they take. Nothing lies outside his control. He accomplishes his purposes through both the righteous and the wicked, and no one can outwit him or frustrate his plans.
That truth naturally leads to Solomon’s question: “How then can man understand his way?” We can make careful plans, but none of us can know with certainty where our path will lead. God alone sees the end from the beginning. Rather than trying to control the future, we are called to trust the One who already holds it in his hands. In the end, his purposes are always wiser and better than our own.
The second proverb applies that same humility to our words. It is a snare to declare something “holy” without careful thought. In Israel, this referred to making a vow by setting something apart for God. Rash promises could quickly become a trap when a person pledged more than she had wisely considered. Wisdom teaches us to think before we speak, especially when making commitments to the Lord.
Once a vow or promise has been made, however, it should be kept. God’s Word warns that it is better not to make a vow than to make one and fail to fulfill it (Ecclesiastes 5:4–6). The wise woman is not known for impulsive promises or dramatic resolutions. She counts the cost before she speaks and faithfully follows through on every commitment she makes.
Live today in humble dependence upon the Lord. Hold your plans, your dreams, and even your promises with open hands before him. Before making commitments, seek his wisdom in his Word and through godly counsel. Then faithfully obey what he places before you. You cannot direct your own steps, but you can trust the One who does.
