Proverbs 16:18-19 (ESV)

18 Pride goes before destruction,
and a haughty spirit before a fall.
19 It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor
than to divide the spoil with the proud.

Pride has always been the pathway to ruin. Solomon warns, “Pride goes before destruction.” The Hebrew word translated “destruction” is shever, which describes something broken, shattered, or beyond repair. Pride marks the beginning of a person’s downward descent. The arrogant believe they know better than everyone else, even better than God himself. Because they reject his wisdom and insist on following their own understanding, they inevitably experience the painful consequences of their rebellion.

Solomon continues, “and a haughty spirit before a fall.” The Hebrew word translated “fall” is kishalon, referring to a collapse or sudden downfall. Pride blinds people to correction. They refuse wise counsel, dismiss loving rebuke, and often learn only through painful failure, if they learn at all. Because God himself opposes the proud, what begins as self confidence ultimately ends in humiliation.

In contrast, Solomon declares, “It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor than to divide the spoil with the proud.” The “spoil” refers to the riches and possessions gained after a military victory. In God’s economy, it is far better to possess humility with very little than to enjoy wealth alongside those who arrogantly reject him. We are often tempted to measure success by possessions, influence, or financial gain, but God measures it not by what we accumulate in this life, but by the condition of our hearts.

Jesus exposed this same misplaced value system when he said, “For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God” (Luke 16:15). We can be tempted to treasure beautiful homes, stylish clothes, financial security, successful children, impressive careers, carefully curated social media feeds, or the approval of others. Yet earthly treasures gained at the expense of humility will prove worthless in the end, for they cannot shield anyone from the coming and righteous judgment of God.

God sees both the proud and the humble, and he will judge each with perfect justice. Those who exalt themselves will one day be brought low, while those who humbly trust in the Lord will be lifted up. When you are tempted to rely on your own wisdom or take matters into your own hands, listen to his word, receive his correction, and trust him to accomplish what pride never can. He delights to pour out grace on those who humbly submit to him.
