Proverbs 16:16-17 (ESV)

16 How much better to get wisdom than gold!

To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.

17 The highway of the upright turns aside from evil;

whoever guards his way preserves his life.

Solomon once again reminds us that wisdom is infinitely more valuable than earthly wealth. “How much better” emphasizes the vast difference in value. Gold and silver may provide temporary comfort, but they cannot teach us how to live wisely. Wealth without wisdom often becomes a source of destruction, while wisdom enables us to live in a way that pleases God and, one day, look back on our lives without regret, whether we have much or little.

Imagine that two boxes were placed before you. One contained financial freedom, success, and every material comfort you could desire. The other contained godly wisdom and understanding. Which would you choose? Most of us would quickly answer, “Wisdom.” Yet our daily decisions reveal what we truly treasure. Every day we choose between pursuing earthly gain and pursuing the wisdom that comes from God. If God were to evaluate your actions rather than your words, what would he say you truly treasure?

Verse 17 pictures life as a journey along a highway. In the ancient world, travelers would often leave the main road by taking a side road that led to a nearby city. Solomon says the upright refuse to do that. They remain on the highway of wisdom, deliberately turning away from every path that leads toward evil. The fool is captivated by the promises of the forbidden road, but the wise woman knows that every path of disobedience ultimately ends in sorrow and death.

What side road is tempting you today? Perhaps it is the pursuit of money at the expense of your family. Perhaps it is a relationship that is drawing your heart away from Christ. Perhaps it is the pursuit of comfort, approval, entertainment, or sexual temptation online. Whatever promises satisfaction apart from God is inviting you to leave the highway of wisdom. Yet God’s Word says, “Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life” (Proverbs 4:13). The woman who carefully guards her way by clinging to God’s wisdom and obeying his Word preserves her life.

Do not be distracted by the attractions that line the side roads. Keep your eyes fixed on the path of wisdom. Whatever requires you to depart from God’s good way is far too costly. Choose wisdom over wealth, obedience over temptation, and Christ over everything else. You will never regret walking the road that leads to life.
