Proverbs 13:3-4 (ESV)

3 Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life;
he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.
4 The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing,
while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.

Our words reveal the condition of our hearts and determine the course of our lives. “Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life.” The Hebrew word translated “guards” is natsar, which carries the idea of carefully watching over, protecting, or keeping something from harm. Wise women learn not to say everything that crosses their minds. They pause before speaking, resisting the urge to vent every frustration, repeat every piece of gossip, or insert themselves into every conflict. In a world that prizes self expression, Proverbs reminds us that verbal restraint is often a mark of wisdom, maturity, and godliness.

In contrast, “he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.” This person lives without restraint or self control. She speaks quickly, emotionally, and excessively, pouring out words without wisdom or caution. A careless text message, an impulsive social media post, a critical conversation, or gossip disguised as “concern” can quietly destroy trust and leave deep wounds behind. We live in a world filled with endless opportunities to speak publicly and react instantly. Proverbs reminds us that wisdom is not found in saying more, but in knowing when silence is better than speech.

Solomon then shifts from words to work. “The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing.” The sluggard has desires just like everyone else. She wants comfort, security, provision, success, and satisfaction. But she is unwilling to labor faithfully toward good and godly goals. She expects life to provide what she has not worked for. The sluggard becomes a drain on others because she continually consumes while refusing responsibility.

“But the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.” Proverbs consistently teaches that faithful labor leads to provision. The diligent woman fulfills her responsibilities even when no one notices. She studies Scripture, keeps her word, faithfully loves her family, cares for others, and serves even when she is tired. The world may overlook quiet faithfulness, but God does not. As women diligently pursue what is good, God promises to sustain and satisfy them far more deeply than a selfish pursuit of comfort ever could.

At times it may seem like irresponsible people prosper while hardworking and faithful women struggle. Some labor quietly for years with little recognition while others appear to gain influence, wealth, or ease without integrity. But God sees every unseen act of faithfulness, every restrained word, every personal sacrifice, and every diligent effort to honor him. The path of the sluggard slowly leads to ruin, even if it appears easy for a season. But the path of the diligent leads to the lasting reward of knowing your way is pleasing to the Lord.
