Proverbs 8:1–3 (ESV)

Does not wisdom call?

Does not understanding raise her voice?

2 On the heights beside the way,

at the crossroads she takes her stand;

beside the gates in front of the town,

at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud:

The father has been training his son to live wisely in a world filled with competing voices. Now the scene shifts. Wisdom herself calls out, and understanding raises her voice. This is not a quiet whisper but a clear and urgent appeal. Unlike the adulteress who lures in secret, wisdom speaks openly and loudly. She is not trying to deceive. She calls people to what is true and good.

Notice all the places where wisdom stands. She is on the heights beside the way, at the crossroads, beside the city gates, and at the entrance of the portals. These are public, visible places where people travel, gather, and make important decisions. Wisdom is not hidden or difficult to find. She places herself right in the flow of everyday activity, where choices are continually made. At every turning point, her voice is available to guide those who are willing to listen.

This means no one can say that wisdom was out of reach. God has made his truth accessible to all. To hear wisdom is to hear what God has said, and he has spoken clearly in his word. He has not left us to figure out life on our own. Through Scripture, he calls out plainly, directing us toward what leads to life and away from what leads to destruction.

So the issue is not whether wisdom is speaking, but whether we are listening. It is easy to ignore her voice, especially when other voices promise something easier or more appealing, or when we trust our own judgment and assume we know what is best. At times we simply do not want to give attention to any voice, even God’s, if it requires change or sacrifice. Yet to ignore her is to turn from the path of life. Wisdom tells the truth, even when it is hard, and calls for obedience that leads to life.

Take a moment to consider the decisions before you. Where are you at a crossroads right now? What choice is in front of you? Are you listening carefully to what God has said, or drifting toward what feels right or easy in the moment? Wisdom is calling. Do not tune her out. Listen, respond, and remain on the path that leads to life.
