Proverbs 7:25-27 (ESV)

25 Let not your heart turn aside to her ways;

do not stray into her paths,

26 for many a victim has she laid low,

and all her slain are a mighty throng.

27 Her house is the way to Sheol,

going down to the chambers of death.

The father gives a direct command. Do not listen to the seductive voice. Instead, guard your heart. “Let not your heart turn aside.” Sin begins in the heart before it shows itself in any outward act. It starts when the heart begins to drift, when the mind lingers where it should not, when sinful desire is allowed to grow unchecked. The issue is not only external behavior but internal attitude.

Here the warning is clear. Do not stray toward sin in thought or action. Do not give it space in your mind or take even a step in its direction. The son is not to wander near danger like the young man lacking sense. He is to remain firmly on the path of wisdom. This requires intentionality. You do not drift toward holiness. You must choose it and resist the pull of competing voices if you are to remain on the right path.

Next, the father explains why this matters. “Many a victim has she laid low.” This is not an isolated case. The Hebrew word chalal, translated “victim,” refers to those who are pierced or slain, often used of those killed in battle. Sin is not harmless. It is deadly. Those who give in are not merely making a small mistake. They are being cut down. The picture is sobering. A mighty throng has fallen. They were strong. They were capable. They likely thought they could handle it. None of them did.

Finally, the father pulls back the curtain to reveal the end. Her house may appear inviting, but it is the road to Sheol. It is a path that leads down, step by step, into death. What promises pleasure delivers destruction. What looks appealing in the moment ends in ruin.

So this is not just about one specific sin. It is about every temptation that opposes God and his word. Sin always lies. It minimizes the cost and hides the outcome. Wisdom does the opposite. It tells the truth and calls for a response. Be honest. Where are you most tempted right now? What ungodly thoughts are you allowing to linger? What situations are you tolerating that you should be avoiding? Do not drift near what can destroy you. Get on the path of wisdom and stay on it.

    “You do not drift toward holiness. You must choose it and resist the pull of competing voices if you are to remain on the right path.“
    Sin is not just something we fell into, we chose it. Chose holiness instead.
