Proverbs 22:3–5 (ESV)
3 The prudent sees danger and hides himself,
but the simple go on and suffer for it.
4 The reward for humility and fear of the LORD
is riches and honor and life.
5 Thorns and snares are in the way of the crooked;
whoever guards his soul will keep far from them.
The prudent does not ignore danger. She recognizes evil before it overtakes her and wisely changes course. God’s Word has trained her to recognize temptation, sinful influences, and the destructive consequences of foolish choices before they bring lasting harm. Rather than seeing how close she can come to sin without falling, she wisely keeps far from it.
The simple woman responds very differently. Though the danger is plainly visible, she presses ahead and suffers the consequences. Her problem is not a lack of intelligence but a refusal to heed God’s warnings. Again and again, Proverbs reminds us that wisdom is measured not by what we know, but by how we respond to what God has revealed.
Solomon then turns to the reward of humility and the fear of the Lord. Throughout Proverbs, these two qualities are closely connected. The humble woman gladly admits that she needs God’s wisdom because she cannot safely navigate life on her own. She willingly submits to his Word, trusting that his commands are given for her good. The result is a life marked by God’s blessing. Riches, honor, and life are the ordinary rewards of walking in his wise and righteous ways.
The chapter closes with another picture of life’s two paths. The way of the crooked is lined with thorns and hidden snares that wound those who walk it. The woman who guards her life chooses a different path altogether. She does not linger near evil or assume she is strong enough to resist it. She keeps her distance because she knows that the safest path is the one God has marked out for her.
Where are the thorns and snares in your own life? They may be obvious temptations, unhealthy relationships, compromising entertainment, financial shortcuts, or situations that repeatedly pull your heart away from Christ. Do not assume you are strong enough to walk safely among them. The wise woman guards her life by choosing her path carefully. She does not flirt with danger because she trusts that God’s guardrails are given to protect her, not to deprive her.
