Proverbs 8:4–5 (ESV)

4 “To you, O men, I call,

and my cry is to the children of man.

5 O simple ones, learn prudence;

O fools, learn sense.

Wisdom raises her voice and directs it to everyone. “To you” grabs the reader’s attention, while “men” and “children of man” make the call universal. No one is excluded. She is not hidden or reserved for a select few. She calls out openly in the normal places of life, where daily life unfolds. God has made his truth accessible in his word. If someone refuses wisdom, it is not because they could not hear, but because they choose not to listen.

First, she addresses the simple, translated from the Hebrew word pethi. These are the inexperienced, those who lack discernment and are easily influenced. They are not yet set in their ways, which makes this a moment of opportunity. Wisdom calls them to “learn prudence,” from the Hebrew word ormah, meaning to think carefully, to weigh what is right, and to exercise discretion. The simple do not have to remain where they are. They have the potential to become people who see truth clearly and live in a way that honors God.

Then she turns to the fool, translated from the Hebrew word kesil. This is the one who has heard truth and rejected it. He is not lacking instruction but resisting it. Yet even here, the call is not withdrawn. “Learn sense.” The focus is on the heart, the center of thought and decision. God calls even the resistant to turn, to stop trusting themselves, and to begin aligning their thinking with his truth. No one is beyond the reach of wisdom if they are willing to respond.

This means wisdom is not reserved for the naturally talented or intellectually superior. It is available to all who will listen and obey. The issue is not ability but humility. Some will receive instruction and grow, while others will continue in their own way. The dividing line is whether a person is willing to submit to what God has said.

So examine your own heart. Are you teachable, or are you resisting truth you already know? Are you drifting in simplicity or settling into stubbornness? Wisdom is calling to you right now. Ask God for a heart that listens and responds. Then take one clear step today to align your thinking and your actions with his word.
