Proverbs 7:23-24 (ESV)

23 till an arrow pierces its liver;

as a bird rushes into a snare;

he does not know that it will cost him his life.

24 And now, O sons, listen to me,

and be attentive to the words of my mouth.

The father concludes his account of the tragic encounter between the young man lacking sense and the adulteress. The foolish man has followed her into her house and into her bed, casting aside any wisdom he may have received. This young man has already been compared to an ox going to slaughter and a stag caught in a trap. What began as wandering has now ended in ruin.

The imagery becomes even more graphic. The stag is struck down as an arrow pierces its liver, a picture of sudden and fatal judgment. In the ancient world, the liver was associated with life itself. To pierce it was to end life quickly and decisively. The father adds a final image, a bird rushing into a snare. It moves quickly and thoughtlessly, unaware that the very next moment will be its last. In the same way, this man has no idea that his sin will cost him his life. He has separated his choices from their consequences, believing the lie that he can indulge without paying the price.

Sin often promises secrecy and satisfaction but delivers bondage and loss. It dulls our awareness of danger and convinces us that consequences are either distant or nonexistent. Many fall because they assume they will be the exception. They believe it will not happen to them, and they are often shocked when they are exposed and must pay for what they have done. Sin always takes far more than it gives.

After painting this sobering picture, the father turns directly to his sons with urgency. “Listen to me. Be attentive.” The issue is no longer just the young man in the story. It is every listener. There are competing voices in the world, some loud and persuasive, others quiet yet steady. The command is clear. Do not give your attention to voices that minimize sin or redefine it. Give your attention to wisdom. Train yourself to listen carefully to what God has said and to those who faithfully teach it.

Because we will be bombarded with lies throughout our lives, we must refuse to entertain thoughts or conversations that pull us toward sin. When confronted with a choice, we must not linger, wait until we feel convinced, or weigh our options when it comes to obedience and disobedience. We must quickly choose to listen to God. What temptation are you facing today? Which voice carries the most weight in your life right now? The world will always tell you there is no cost. God tells you the truth. Listen to him, and live.
