Proverbs 21:16–18 (ESV)
16 One who wanders from the way of good sense
will rest in the assembly of the dead.
17 Whoever loves pleasure will be a poor man;
he who loves wine and oil will not be rich.
18 The wicked is a ransom for the righteous,
and the traitor for the upright.
As we have seen throughout Proverbs, life is a journey, and every person is walking a particular path. The woman who wanders from the way of wisdom imagines she has found a better road, one with fewer restrictions and greater freedom. Yet the path she chooses ultimately leads to a bitter end. In her pursuit of an easier and more pleasurable life, she forfeits the very life she was seeking and comes to rest among the dead.
The next proverb exposes another dangerous detour. There is nothing sinful about enjoying God’s good gifts, but the woman who loves pleasure above all else gradually loses what is truly valuable. She spends herself pursuing comfort and self-indulgence until little remains. Solomon mentions wine and oil because they represented festive living and luxury. What begins as harmless indulgence gradually becomes bondage, draining both her resources and her soul until she is left spiritually and financially poor.
The final proverb reminds us that God ultimately turns the tables. The wicked may plot against the righteous and appear to prosper for a season, but they never escape his justice. Instead, they suffer the very judgment they intended for others. Haman built the gallows for Mordecai, yet he himself was hanged upon them (Esther 7:10). God is never surprised by evil, and he never allows it to have the final word.
Take a moment to ask yourself what you love most. Is your greatest desire to know Christ, or have comfort, pleasure, and ease quietly become your highest priorities? It is easy to spend more time planning the next purchase, trip, or experience than pursuing the God who gave them. The things of this world make wonderful gifts but terrible masters.
The path of wisdom is not the easiest path, but it is the only one that leads to life. Enjoy every good gift God places in your hands, but love and trust him far more than his gifts. Those who seek their deepest satisfaction in Christ discover a joy this world can never provide and a treasure that can never be taken away.
