Proverbs 21:11–12 (ESV)
11 When a scoffer is punished, the simple becomes wise;
when a wise man is instructed, he gains knowledge.
12 The Righteous One observes the house of the wicked;
he throws the wicked down to ruin.
Solomon places three kinds of people before us. The first is the scoffer. Even when she is disciplined for her sin, she refuses to learn. Her heart remains hard, and she continues resisting God’s wisdom, blaming other people or her circumstances rather than taking responsibility for her own sin. The second is the simple woman. Though she lacks discernment, she watches the scoffer’s punishment and begins to understand that sin has consequences. Because she is still teachable, she has the potential to learn from what she sees and, in time, to become wise.
The third woman is the wise. Unlike the scoffer, she does not have to learn everything the hard way. She gladly receives instruction and continues growing in knowledge throughout her life. She never reaches the point where she believes there is nothing left to learn. Instead, she eagerly embraces God’s correction because she knows his commands are always for her good and never for her harm.
The final proverb lifts our eyes from human responses to God’s perfect justice. “The Righteous One observes the house of the wicked.” Nothing escapes his notice. He sees every action, every motive, and every secret thought. Those who build their lives on wickedness may appear to prosper for a season, but the Lord sees exactly what is taking place, and in his perfect time he will bring the wicked to ruin.
Where do you see yourself today? Are you resisting God’s Word like the scoffer, slowly awakening to wisdom like the simple, or eagerly receiving instruction like the wise? When God’s Word or a trusted believer exposes your sin, is your first instinct to defend yourself or to repent? The way you respond to correction reveals whether your heart is growing harder or wiser.
We are all moving in one of these three directions. The scoffer hardens her heart. The simple begins to learn. The wise gladly submits to God’s Word. Wherever you find yourself today, ask the Lord to make you wise. Then humbly and happily receive whatever means he chooses to use to answer that prayer.
