Proverbs 21:6–8 (ESV)
6 The getting of treasures by a lying tongue
is a fleeting vapor and a snare of death.
7 The violence of the wicked will sweep them away,
because they refuse to do what is just.
8 The way of the guilty is crooked,
but the conduct of the pure is upright.
Solomon begins with a warning about dishonest gain. Some people fill their wallets by twisting the truth. They exaggerate, conceal important facts, manipulate others, or make promises they never intend to keep. For a time, their deception seems to pay off. But the treasure they gained quickly slips through their fingers like a breath on a cold morning. Worse still, the lie they thought would secure their future becomes the very snare that brings them to ruin.
The next proverb reveals why this happens. “The violence of the wicked will sweep them away.” Those who oppress others eventually become victims of their own evil. Solomon pictures them being swept away like fish caught in a net. They sought to harm others, but they themselves are carried off to judgment because they continually refuse to do what is right. God is never indifferent to injustice, and he will not allow wickedness to triumph forever.
The final proverb contrasts two completely different ways of life. The guilty walk a crooked path, constantly twisting the truth and turning away from God’s commands. The upright, however, walk a straight path. Having turned from living for themselves to following the Lord, their conduct reflects the purity and integrity that characterize a life of wisdom. As they continue to walk with him, their lives increasingly reflect his character.
Be honest about the path you are planning to walk today. Are there places where you have justified dishonesty because it seemed profitable or excused sinful behavior because everyone else was doing it? The crooked path always promises more than it can deliver, but only the straight path of obedience leads to life as God designed it.
Though the way of the righteous is often harder, it is always better. God is not calling you merely to avoid lying or violence. He is calling you to become a woman whose entire life is marked by truth and integrity. Walk that path with confidence today, knowing that although obedience may cost you in the moment, the Lord never withholds what is truly good from those who trust him and walk in his ways.
