Proverbs 21:19–20 (ESV)
19 It is better to live in a desert land
than with a quarrelsome and fretful woman.
20 Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man’s dwelling,
but a foolish man devours it.
Solomon intensifies a warning he has already given. Earlier he said a man would be better off living on the corner of his roof than sharing a house with a quarrelsome wife. Now he goes even further. It would be better to live alone in the desert. The wilderness was hot, dry, lonely, and often dangerous. Yet even such a harsh existence was preferable to living with a woman whose constant conflict and provocation robbed her home of its peace.
The issue is not that this woman occasionally disagrees or expresses concern. She is characterized by continual strife and aggravation. Her selfishness creates an atmosphere of tension that leaves those around her exhausted. Instead of making her home a place of refuge, she turns it into a place from which others long to escape.
The next proverb provides a striking contrast. The home of the wise contains precious treasure and oil, symbols of God’s provision and blessing. The wise woman receives those gifts with gratitude and manages them carefully. The fool, however, greedily consumes whatever comes into her hands. She lives only for the present, allowing her resources to disappear as quickly as she acquires them. What the wise carefully preserves, the fool thoughtlessly devours.
Ask yourself what kind of home you are building. Do the people who live with you experience peace or continual tension? Do you carefully steward the resources God has entrusted to you, or do you continually consume more than you should? Wisdom builds a home marked by peace, contentment, and faithful stewardship.
The peace of your home begins long before it is seen in your words or even your spending habits. It begins in your heart. A woman who trusts the Lord does not have to control every circumstance or chase after every opportunity for pleasure. She rests in God’s faithful provision, creating a home where both relationships and resources flourish under his gracious care.
