Proverbs 14:5-7 (ESV)

5 A faithful witness does not lie,

but a false witness breathes out lies.

6 A scoffer seeks wisdom in vain,

but knowledge is easy for a man of understanding.

7 Leave the presence of a fool,

for there you do not meet words of knowledge.

Solomon begins by contrasting a faithful witness with a false witness. A faithful witness tells the truth. Whether in a courtroom, a conversation, or everyday life, she is committed to speaking honestly. This command reflects the ninth commandment: “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor” (Exodus 20:16). In contrast, the false witness “breathes out lies.” Lying comes as naturally to her as breathing. She twists the truth for personal gain, to secure a bribe, to escape consequences, or to avoid threats and pressure from others.

Ultimately, truthfulness is not merely a matter of words but of the heart. Jesus taught, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34). A good heart speaks truth, while a corrupt heart speaks lies. Our words reveal far more about us than we often realize. The mouth simply exposes what the heart already contains. If a person is habitually given over to lying, the deeper problem is not the tongue but the heart.

Verse 6 shifts from speech to wisdom. “A scoffer seeks wisdom in vain.” The scoffer may appear interested in truth, but she never finds it because her pride prevents her from receiving it. She refuses to acknowledge God as her Creator and authority. She rejects correction, dismisses counsel, and insists on determining truth for herself. As long as she remains committed to her own autonomy, wisdom will remain beyond her reach.

By contrast, “knowledge is easy for a man of understanding.” The wise person knows that wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord. She gladly learns from God’s word, receives correction, and submits her opinions to his authority. When confronted with truth, she does not argue with God but yields to him. Because she has embraced the proper starting point, knowledge becomes accessible to her.

Solomon concludes with a practical command: “Leave the presence of a fool, for there you do not meet words of knowledge.” Wisdom is not found among those who reject the Lord. The fool may sound intelligent, confident, and persuasive, but she refuses God’s right to rule over her life. Scripture repeatedly warns us that the company we keep influences the people we become. So choose your friends and counselors carefully. Do not seek wisdom from those who reject him. Instead, seek the Lord and his word, for there alone you will find truth, knowledge, and life.
