Proverbs 15:25–27 (ESV)

25 The LORD tears down the house of the proud
but maintains the widow’s boundaries.
26 The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD,
but gracious words are pure.
27 Whoever is greedy for unjust gain troubles his own household,
but he who hates bribes will live.

These verses remind us that God is deeply concerned with justice. Verse 25 declares, “The Lord tears down the house of the proud but maintains the widow’s boundaries.” The proud person exalts herself above others and ultimately above God himself. She uses her position, influence, or resources to take advantage of those who are weaker. In contrast, the widow represents the vulnerable and defenseless. In ancient Israel, boundary markers identified property lines. Dishonest people would sometimes move those markers little by little to increase their own land at another person’s expense. Though the widow may have no power to defend herself, the Lord himself protects her and preserves what rightfully belongs to her.

Verse 26 moves from outward actions to inward motives. “The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord.” God not only judges what people do, but also the sinful schemes and selfish plans they devise in their hearts. In contrast, “gracious words are pure.” Words that are truthful and free from selfish agendas are precious in God’s sight because they flow from a heart that desires to honor him.

Verse 27 returns to the subject of dishonest gain. “Whoever is greedy for unjust gain troubles his own household.” Greed promises prosperity but often brings heartache and ruin to an entire family. The woman who pursues wealth through manipulation, deception, or unethical practices ultimately harms those she hopes to benefit. By contrast, the person who hates bribes and rejects dishonest profit “will live.” She enjoys the blessings of integrity, a clear conscience, and the favor of God.

Together, these proverbs reveal God’s concern for both our actions and our hearts. He defends the vulnerable, condemns wicked schemes, and opposes dishonest gain. While the world often rewards pride, manipulation, and greed, God measures success very differently. He delights in integrity. Nothing escapes his notice.

Are you honest when it comes to financial transactions? Most of us are not tempted to move physical boundary markers, but we may be tempted to shade the truth, keep money that is not rightfully ours, or fail to pay what we owe. Perhaps it is underreporting income, exaggerating a business expense, keeping incorrect change, or selling something while concealing a defect. The woman who fears the Lord refuses unjust gain and trusts him to provide. Though dishonesty may seem profitable for a season, righteousness is always the better path.
