Proverbs 15:28-30 (ESV)
28 The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer,
but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.
29 The Lord is far from the wicked,
but he hears the prayer of the righteous.
30 The light of the eyes rejoices the heart,
and good news refreshes the bones.
Solomon writes, “The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer.” The Hebrew word translated “ponders” is hagah, which carries the idea of considering, reflecting, or carefully weighing a matter. The righteous woman does not speak rashly. Although she may know what she wants to say, she pauses to consider the right words, the proper timing, and the needs of her audience. Her goal is not simply to prove herself right, but to communicate what is right in a way that benefits others.
In contrast, “the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.” Rather than exercising self control, the wicked person blurts out whatever comes to mind. She feels compelled to vent her frustrations without considering how her speech affects those around her. While the righteous woman carefully guards her tongue, the wicked woman gives free expression to her sinful impulses.
Verse 29 reminds us that “The Lord is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous.” To hear in this context means more than simply listening. It carries the idea of responding favorably. God does not promise his help to those who persist in rebellion against him. Yet he gladly hears and answers those who come to him in humble faith. As Psalm 145:18 declares, “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” Yet even the wicked person who turns from her sin and cries out to God for mercy will find that he is ready to forgive.
Finally, Solomon observes that “the light of the eyes rejoices the heart, and good news refreshes the bones.” We all know the joy that comes with receiving encouraging news. Our eyes brighten and our hearts are lifted. Good news refreshes the whole person. Ultimately, every piece of encouraging news points us to the greatest news of all: the gospel of Jesus Christ. Through his death and resurrection, sinners can be forgiven and reconciled to God. No news could ever bring greater joy.
How do you respond when your feelings are hurt? Do you allow resentment to build until bitter words come pouring out, or do you carefully consider how to respond in a way that honors God and benefits others? The righteous woman trusts God with her disappointments, chooses her words thoughtfully, and continually brings the concerns of her heart to him in prayer. Ask God today to make your words not a stream of bitterness, but a source of encouragement to those around you.
