Proverbs 18:1-2 (ESV)
1 Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire;
he breaks out against all sound judgment.
2 A fool takes no pleasure in understanding,
but only in expressing his opinion.
At times, God’s people are tempted to withdraw from others because they are hurting. The fool withdraws for a very different reason. She isolates herself because she refuses accountability and wants to pursue her own desires. Whether she distances herself from family, faithful friends, or the church, her isolation reveals a heart that prefers its own way to God’s wisdom.
Such a person “breaks out against all sound judgment.” The Hebrew verb translated “breaks out” (gala) pictures someone who bursts out in determined opposition to wise counsel. She does not merely ignore wisdom. She actively resists it because she refuses to let anyone tell her how to live. The very counsel that could have protected her becomes the counsel she rages against.
The second proverb exposes the same heart from another angle. The fool has no desire to understand. She is far more interested in expressing her own opinions than in gaining wisdom. She enters conversations not to learn but to reveal what is already on her mind. Rather than receiving instruction, she finds satisfaction in making her own thoughts known.
Ask yourself what kind of listener you have been this week. When someone offered wise counsel, were you eager to receive it, or were you simply waiting for your opportunity to respond? Ask the Lord to give you a humble heart that delights in understanding more than in expressing its own opinions.
God never designed the Christian life to be lived alone. He has given us his Word, his people, and his church because we need them. The next time someone offers biblical counsel that challenges your thinking, resist the urge to defend yourself. Instead, ask, “What might God be teaching me through this?” The woman who delights in understanding will always be wiser than the woman who delights only in expressing her own opinion.
