Proverbs 19:20-21 (ESV)
19 Listen to advice and accept instruction,
that you may gain wisdom in the future.
20 Many are the plans in the mind of a man,
but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.
The passage opens with a simple but profound command that has become familiar to the reader: “Listen to advice and accept instruction.” Wisdom does not come naturally. It is learned by those who are willing to listen, receive correction, and put godly counsel into practice. The Hebrew word translated “accept” means to receive something as true or valid. The wise woman does more than hear God’s instruction. She believes it and gladly orders her life according to it.
Wisdom is also cultivated over time. “That you may gain wisdom in the future.” Godly character is not formed overnight. As we repeatedly receive correction and submit ourselves to God’s Word, he teaches us to think more wisely and live more faithfully. Too many begin pursuing wisdom but grow discouraged when growth is slower than they expected. The blessings of wisdom belong to those who patiently persevere, trusting that God is faithfully at work even when progress seems gradual.
We are then reminded why this pursuit of wisdom is so necessary. We naturally make many plans for the future, yet no matter how carefully we think them through, we cannot guarantee their outcome. In contrast, the Lord’s purposes never fail. He alone sees the end from the beginning, and nothing can prevent him from accomplishing all that he has ordained.
God’s people are called to plan wisely while holding every plan with an open hand. We gladly submit our desires and dreams to the Lord because he knows what is best. He is faithfully working all things together for the good of those who love him (Romans 8:28). Our confidence is not found in our ability to plan well, but in belonging to the God whose purposes always stand.
Jesus perfectly lived this truth. He faithfully accomplished the work his Father gave him to do, submitting every step to the Father’s will. Follow his example by bringing your plans before the Lord, measuring them against his Word, and gladly changing course whenever necessary. Whether it matches your desires and dreams or not, the wisest path is always the one God directs.
