Proverbs 19:17-19 (ESV)
17 Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD,
and he will repay him for his deed.
18 Discipline your son, for there is hope;
do not set your heart on putting him to death.
19 A man of great wrath will pay the penalty,
for if you deliver him, you will only have to do it again.
Solomon begins with a remarkable promise. Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord himself. God so identifies with those in need that he regards kindness shown to them as kindness shown to him. Jesus expressed this same truth when he taught that whatever his people do for “the least of these,” they do for him (Matthew 25:35–40). The woman who generously cares for those in need can trust that the Lord sees every act of compassion and will faithfully reward it.
Solomon then turns from caring for the poor to caring for our children. Loving parents do not simply provide food, clothing, and shelter. They also provide loving correction. Discipline requires patience, consistency, and hard work, but Solomon reminds parents that there is hope while a child is still young enough to be trained. To neglect loving discipline is to leave a child on a path that leads toward destruction. Wise correction may be difficult in the moment, but it is one of the greatest expressions of love a parent can give.
Finally, Solomon warns against repeatedly rescuing a person ruled by anger. The hot tempered person continually suffers because of her own actions. If someone repeatedly steps in to rescue her, nothing changes. She simply returns to the same destructive behavior. Sometimes love requires us to step back and let a person face the results of her choices. God often uses those painful lessons to expose sin and draw people to repentance.
Biblical love is not measured by how quickly it relieves discomfort. Sometimes it gives generously to those in need. Other times it lovingly corrects or allows someone to experience the results of persistent sin. Genuine love always seeks another person’s eternal good rather than merely making life easier for the moment.
Jesus perfectly demonstrated this kind of love. He cared for the needy, faithfully corrected those he loved, and never compromised the truth to make people comfortable. Ask God to give you that same wisdom, so that your love seeks what is truly best for others, even when it requires the courage to trust God with the outcome.
