Proverbs 11:9-11 (ESV)
9 With his mouth the godless man would destroy his neighbor,
but by knowledge the righteous are delivered.
10 When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices,
and when the wicked perish there are shouts of gladness.
11 By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted,
but by the mouth of the wicked it is overthrown.
In Proverbs 11:8 we saw that the righteous are spared from trouble while the wicked walk straight into it themselves. Now Solomon explains one common way evil operates. With his mouth the godless man would destroy his neighbor. The godless person lives as though God and his ways do not matter. He uses speech as a weapon. Through gossip, half truths, false accusations, flattery, and bad counsel, he tears others down. He may pretend friendship to gain trust, only to use private information later for harm. Wounds are caused not only by fists, but by words.
But by knowledge the righteous are delivered. Wisdom helps the godly recognize danger before they are ensnared by it. The righteous learn to discern manipulative people, dishonest speech, and the kind of conversation that poisons hearts. They do not eagerly receive gossip, nor do they join in it. They know when to step back, when to stay silent, and when to walk away. Good judgment often spares a woman from pain that careless curiosity would have invited.
When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices. Righteous people bless the places where they live. Their presence strengthens families, churches, and communities. When the wicked perish there are shouts of gladness. People rejoice when destructive rule is finally broken. This is not petty revenge. It is relief when oppression ends, corruption is removed, and those who harmed others can do so no longer.
By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted. God often uses faithful people as channels of blessing to many others. A righteous wife can strengthen a home. A faithful pastor can steady a church. A wise civic leader can help a community flourish. Yet what righteousness builds, wicked speech can quickly damage. By the mouth of the wicked a city is overthrown. Suspicion, constant criticism, division, and slander can tear down what took years to build.
Have you ever met the woman who always wants to tell you what is wrong with someone else? Have you noticed how easily social media can train you to feast on dirt and drama, persuading you that insider information about scandal is the same as wisdom? Be careful what voices you welcome today. The wise woman does not feed on slander. She turns away from corrosive talk and chooses truth instead. Better to walk with the righteous in the quiet peace of truth than sit with the wicked in the fleeting thrill of gossip.
