Proverbs 11:6-8 (ESV)

6 The righteousness of the upright delivers them,
but the treacherous are taken captive by their lust.
7 When the wicked dies, his hope will perish,
and the expectation of wealth perishes too.
8 The righteous is delivered from trouble,
and the wicked walks into it instead.

The righteousness of the upright delivers them. Solomon is not teaching that anyone earns salvation by moral effort. He is describing the ordinary pattern of life under God’s wise rule. Those who fear God, repent of sin, and seek to walk in obedience are often spared many sorrows that rebellion invites. Truthfulness preserves trust. Sexual purity avoids devastation. Humility welcomes correction. Self control prevents many wounds. Right living does not remove every trial, but it often keeps a woman from traps that sinful choices set.

In contrast, the treacherous are taken captive by their lust. The Hebrew word translated as “lust” is havvah. It carries the idea of destructive desire, craving, ruinous passion, mischief, or calamity. It often points to desires that are morally twisted and lead to harm. In this verse, the treacherous are not merely captured by ordinary wants, but by corrupt cravings that eventually ruin them. The woman who will not stop flirting with temptation, feeding bitterness, chasing attention, overspending to impress others, or hiding secret habits may feel in control for a season. But soon the desire begins controlling her. What she thought she was managing is now managing her.

When the wicked dies, his hope will perish, and the expectation of wealth perishes too. Whatever he trusted apart from God dies with him. Money cannot deliver from death. Beauty cannot charm it. Influence cannot delay it. Relationships cannot shield from judgment. If your confidence rests in wealth, charm, power, or even another person, death strips it all away. It is madness to rest your soul on anything that cannot survive the grave.

Again, the righteous is delivered from trouble, but the wicked walks into it instead. The one who schemes against others may fall into her own snare. The gossip who spreads ruin may lose trusted friendships herself. The woman who builds life on deceit may watch everything collapse at once. Meanwhile, the one who quietly fears God, though overlooked for a time, is kept by stronger hands than her own.

Apart from Christ, no one, not one, has hope. But those who confess their sin, trust in Jesus, and follow him are counted righteous through his finished work. When earthly life ends, it is not the end of their joy but the beginning of it. What on earth is keeping you from responding rightly to God today? Do not delay. Get on your knees and get right with the only one who can make you right.
