Proverbs 21:30–31 (ESV)
30 No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel
can avail against the LORD.
31 The horse is made ready for the day of battle,
but the victory belongs to the LORD.
Solomon closes the chapter by reminding us that no human wisdom can stand against the Lord. He deliberately piles three words together: wisdom, understanding, and counsel. No matter how carefully people think, plan, or strategize, they cannot overturn what God has determined to do. His wisdom is perfect, his understanding is infinite, and his purposes always prevail.

No human wisdom or strategy can overturn what he has determined to do. The wise woman therefore submits herself to God’s wisdom rather than trusting her own.
The final proverb illustrates this truth with a familiar picture. The horse was prepared for battle because wise preparation was expected. Yet no amount of military strength could secure victory apart from the Lord. Horses, weapons, and battle plans were useful, but they were never the ultimate source of success. As the psalmist likewise declared, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God” (Psalm 20:7).
Preparation is wise, but our confidence belongs in the Lord alone. Study diligently, save responsibly, train faithfully, plan carefully, and work wholeheartedly. Then entrust the outcome to him. Your bank account cannot secure your future. Your abilities cannot guarantee success. Your health cannot preserve your life. In the end, God alone determines the outcome.
This truth frees us from both pride and fear. We need not boast when our plans succeed or despair when they fail. Tomorrow does not depend on your ability to control every outcome but on God’s perfect wisdom and sovereign care. Faithfully do what he has called you to do today, then rest in the confidence that he will accomplish exactly what he intends.
