Proverbs 18:9-11 (ESV)
9 Whoever is slack in his work
is a brother to him who destroys.
10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower;
the righteous man runs into it and is safe.
11 A rich man’s wealth is his strong city,
and like a high wall in his imagination.
The woman who is careless in her work may not think she is causing any harm, but Solomon says she is the companion of a destroyer. The Hebrew word translated “slack” (rapheh) describes someone who is negligent or careless in carrying out her responsibilities. She puts off what should be done and settles for less than her best. Though she may never swing a wrecking ball, she slowly tears down what God has entrusted to her.
In striking contrast, Solomon turns from the weakness of human effort to the strength of God himself. “The name of the Lord” refers to all that God has revealed about himself. He alone is a strong tower, firmly established and able to protect everyone who runs to him. The righteous do not merely know about God. They run to him, trusting his character and resting in his unfailing care.
The fool, however, runs somewhere else. She trusts in her wealth as though it were a fortified city surrounded by high walls. Money creates the illusion of security, convincing her that she can solve every problem if she has enough of it. Solomon reminds us that this confidence exists only in her imagination. Riches may provide temporary protection, but they cannot shield anyone from death or the judgment of God.
Where do you instinctively run when life becomes difficult? Do you look first to your savings, your abilities, or someone else to rescue you? None of those things are sinful in themselves, but they make poor refuges. Only the Lord is a strong tower who never fails those who run to him.
The world spends a lifetime building walls that cannot save. God’s people build their lives on his unchanging character. Every earthly refuge will eventually fail, but the name of the Lord will never fail those who are found in him.
