Proverbs 19:22-24 (ESV)
22 What is desired in a man is steadfast love,
and a poor man is better than a liar.
23 The fear of the LORD leads to life,
and whoever has it rests satisfied;
he will not be visited by harm.
24 The sluggard buries his hand in the dish
and will not even bring it back to his mouth.
Solomon begins by reminding us what people truly desire. More than wealth, influence, or success, we long for steadfast love. We all hope to find someone who remains faithful when life becomes difficult. That is why Solomon says a poor person is better than a liar. Poverty may limit what a person can give, but dishonesty destroys trust. Better to have little and remain faithful than to gain much while proving yourself untrustworthy.
Next, Solomon points us to the only place where lasting security can be found. “The fear of the Lord leads to life.” The woman who fears God learns to rest in his care because she knows that nothing enters her life apart from his loving hand. While others are consumed by fear of people, uncertain circumstances, or an unknown future, she finds lasting satisfaction in the Lord. In the end, those who fear him will never be disappointed.
Finally, Solomon gives one of the most memorable pictures in Proverbs. The sluggard buries his hand in the dish but cannot be bothered to bring it back to his mouth. The image is almost humorous because it is so absurd. Food is already within reach, yet he is too lazy to eat it. His problem is not a lack of opportunity but a refusal to do what is necessary to benefit from the provision already before him.
Laziness often looks far less dramatic in our own lives. We postpone difficult conversations, neglect responsibilities, put off spiritual disciplines, and convince ourselves that tomorrow will be a better day to begin. Yet opportunities to grow, serve, and obey quietly slip away while we wait. The woman who desires wisdom does more than agree with what is right. She acts on it.
Ask yourself what God is calling you to do today. Is there work you have been avoiding, a habit that needs to change, or an act of obedience you have continued to postpone? Don’t wait for more motivation or better circumstances. The sluggard had everything he needed to satisfy his hunger, yet he refused to act. Don’t make the same mistake. God has already placed before you what you need for today’s obedience. Do what is right today instead of putting it off until tomorrow.
