Proverbs 20:4–6 (ESV)
4 The sluggard does not plow in the autumn;
he will seek at harvest and have nothing.
5 The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water,
but a man of understanding will draw it out.
6 Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love,
but a faithful man who can find?
The sluggard always has an excuse. In ancient Israel, autumn was the time to plow the fields before sowing seed. It was difficult work. The ground was hard and rocky, the weather cold and wet, and plows had to be pulled by animals through stubborn soil. Yet without plowing, there could be no harvest. Rather than preparing for the future, the sluggard chose comfort over diligence. When harvest finally arrived, he wanted what others had worked for, but his own field produced nothing.
The next proverb reminds us that people are not always what they appear to be. “The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water.” Our motives often lie beneath the surface, hidden even from those who know us well. But the woman of understanding is discerning. Like someone lowering a bucket into a deep well, she patiently draws out what is hidden. She asks the right questions, listens carefully, watches consistently, and is not easily deceived by appearances.
This discernment is especially important because many people exaggerate their own faithfulness. It is easy to proclaim our loyalty, make generous promises, or present ourselves as dependable. Remaining faithful when relationships become difficult is another matter. That is why Solomon asks, “A faithful man who can find?” Truly faithful people are rare. They keep their word, remain steadfast through hardship, and can be trusted when others walk away.
Are you doing the hard work God has placed before you today, or are you hoping for a harvest without the effort of plowing? Are you growing in discernment, or do you quickly accept what people say about themselves? And perhaps most importantly, are you becoming the kind of woman others can trust? Faithfulness is not measured by what we promise when life is easy, but by what we continue to do when keeping our word becomes costly.
God never asks of us what he has not first demonstrated himself. His steadfast love never fails, his promises never change, and his faithfulness endures to all generations. As you trust him today, ask him to make you diligent in your work, discerning in your relationships, and unwavering in your commitment to others. A faithful woman is rare indeed, and she is a priceless gift to everyone God places in her life.
