Proverbs 17:23-24 (ESV)
23 A wicked man accepts a bribe in secret
to pervert the ways of justice.
24 The discerning sets his face toward wisdom,
but the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.
The wicked person is willing to sacrifice justice for personal gain. Solomon describes someone who secretly accepts a bribe to pervert justice. The payment is hidden because both parties know they are doing wrong. Yet what is concealed from everyone else is fully visible to God. He sees every secret payment, every corrupt motive, and every act of injustice.
In ancient Israel, the wealthy often used bribery to oppress the poor and corrupt the courts. But bribery is only one expression of a much deeper problem. Any time we are willing to compromise what is right for our own advantage, we reveal the same sinful heart. Though our actions may remain hidden from others, they are never hidden from God. He will one day expose every secret deed and judge it with perfect justice.
Solomon then contrasts the discerning woman with the fool. The discerning keeps her face fixed on wisdom. She knows where she is headed and faithfully pursues the path God has set before her. The fool, however, lets her eyes wander “to the ends of the earth.” She is always chasing something else, never content to give her attention to the responsibilities God has already entrusted to her. Her restless pursuits reveal a heart that has lost sight of true wisdom.
Consider where your eyes have been fixed this week. Have your thoughts been consumed with what you do not have, where you are not, or what God has not given you? Comparison has a way of keeping us restless, convincing us that contentment is always found somewhere else. The fool is always looking over the horizon, certain that something better lies just beyond her reach.
The world constantly encourages us to chase something bigger or somewhere better. God’s wisdom points in a very different direction. Keep your eyes fixed on Christ and faithfully pursue the responsibilities he has entrusted to you today. A life of wisdom is not built by chasing the ends of the earth but by faithfully taking the next step of obedience.
