Proverbs 11:22-23 (ESV)

22 Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout
is a beautiful woman without discretion.
23 The desire of the righteous ends only in good;
the expectation of the wicked in wrath.

Solomon paints a vivid and even shocking picture. In the ancient Near East, women often wore nose rings as beautiful accessories. A gold ring was valuable, refined, and intended to enhance beauty. Yet Solomon compares a beautiful woman without discretion to that same gold ring placed in the snout of a pig. According to Deuteronomy 14:8, pigs were considered unclean animals. They lived in filth, consumed almost anything, and were associated with excess. The contrast is intentionally jarring. What a foolish thing it would be to take something precious and elegant and place it in the nose of an animal wallowing in mud and refuse.

The issue Solomon addresses is not beauty itself. Scripture never condemns beauty as though it were something shameful. Rather, the problem is beauty without wisdom or beauty disconnected from godly character and sound judgment. The Hebrew word translated “discretion” is taam, which carries the idea of taste or discernment. This woman lacks wisdom in how she presents herself and conducts her life. Though outwardly attractive, she rejects God’s design for purity, modesty, and self control. A foolish person may be captivated by outward appearance alone, but God sees deeper.

Verse 23 continues the contrast by describing the desires of the righteous and the expectations of the wicked. The righteous desire what is good. Their hearts increasingly long to honor God, love others, and pursue what pleases him, even when obedience involves sacrifice, discomfort, or suffering. In the end, those desires lead to good because God himself is their reward. The wicked, however, long for something very different. They seek to preserve themselves and secure wealth, power, comfort, status, or pleasure apart from God. Yet the expectation of the wicked ends in wrath. It is not that they consciously desire the judgment of God, but by rejecting his authority and pursuing sin, they store up the very wrath they refuse to fear. In the end, they lose far more than whatever temporary gain they chased so fiercely.

The world spends enormous energy trying to preserve fading beauty, but godly character grows more lovely with time. Proverbs 11:22 speaks powerfully to women living in image conscious communities, where appearance, fashion, fitness, status, and social media presentation can quietly become consuming pursuits.

In a culture that often rewards self promotion, flirtation, and the constant need to be noticed, true daughters of the King pursue something greater. They seek modesty, dignity, wisdom, and purity in their appearance, actions, and attitudes. They understand that inward godliness matters far more than outward allure. A woman adorned with wisdom possesses a beauty that neither age nor circumstance can take away.
