Proverbs 8:22-23 (ESV)

22 “The LORD possessed me at the beginning of his work,

the first of his acts of old.

23 Ages ago I was set up,

at the first, before the beginning of the earth.”

Wisdom now says the Lord, Yahweh,  “possessed” her at the beginning of his work. The Hebrew word qanah, translated “possessed,” can mean to acquire or to create. In this context, it points to wisdom belonging to God himself. It does not mean there was ever a time when God lacked wisdom. As Job 12:13 says, “With God are wisdom and might.” God has always been perfectly wise. Wisdom is his very nature.

When wisdom says she was “brought forth” or “set up,” she is speaking in poetic language. This is personification. Wisdom is described as if she were present at the beginning of creation to make a clear point: everything God made was ordered by his perfect wisdom. As Bruce Waltke explains, this language shows that wisdom comes from God’s own being. It is not something outside of him, but something that flows from who he is.

The emphasis is clear. Before the world existed, before anything you see or experience, God’s wisdom was already at work. That means wisdom stands above creation. She is not limited by time, culture, or human perspective. She knows exactly what she is doing because she reflects the mind of God.

So where should you go for direction? Not to your own understanding or to the shifting opinions around you. How foolish it is to search everywhere else when God has made his wisdom known. If God’s wisdom preceded all things and ordered the formation of all things, then it is the only reliable guide for life within creation. And this wisdom is not distant. God has revealed it in his word and ultimately in Christ, who is called “the wisdom of God” in 1 Corinthians 1:24.

Everywhere we turn, someone is offering their version of wisdom. Open social media and you will find endless voices telling you what to do, what to think, and how to feel. Many speak with confidence, yet they often contradict one another, and it can quickly become confusing. So anchor yourself in what is sure. God has spoken, and his wisdom does not shift or change. Go to him. When you are unsure, open his word. When you are tempted, listen to his voice. When you long for direction, submit your thinking to what he has said. Humble yourself, admit your need, and follow where he leads. The one who ordered the world in wisdom knows exactly how you should live within it.
