Proverbs 8:14-16 (ESV)
14 I have counsel and sound wisdom;
I have insight; I have strength.
15 By me kings reign,
and rulers decree what is just;
16 by me princes rule,
and nobles, all who govern justly.
Wisdom continues to describe her character and the resources she provides. “I have counsel and sound wisdom; I have insight; I have strength.” She offers what is needed to think rightly and act rightly. Counsel speaks of direction that leads to good outcomes, and sound wisdom carries the idea of stability and reliability. Her guidance is not vague or uncertain. It can be trusted. She adds, “I have insight.” In Hebrew, the word translated “insight” is binah, referring to understanding, the ability to see to the heart of a matter. The statement is even stronger than it first appears. It is not merely that she possesses insight, but that she is insight. Wisdom enables us to discern what is truly going on beneath the surface and to respond in a way that aligns with truth.
Wisdom also says, “I have strength.” The Hebrew word translated as “strength” is gevurah, and it speaks of might or power. This is the ability to carry out what is right once it is known. Wisdom does not leave us with good intentions and no follow through. She supplies the strength to bring about real change. Right thinking is joined with the ability to live it out.
She then explains her role in the world. “By me kings reign, and rulers decree what is just; by me princes rule, and nobles, all who govern justly.” Every level of leadership that functions rightly does so through wisdom. Twice she says, “by me,” making it clear that just leadership is not ultimately the product of human ability but of God’s wisdom at work. When leaders govern with justice, it is evidence that they are operating in line with what God has said.
Who would reject wisdom? She gives counsel and insight, imparting real strength to those who heed her voice. Wisdom supplies what is needed not only to know what is right but to carry it out with courage. The qualities that mark good leaders are not reserved for a select few. They are available to anyone who embraces her instruction. Kings, rulers, princes, and nobles are guided by her, but so are ordinary people who choose to listen and obey.
Those who have trusted in Christ and turned from sin have been brought into God’s family. With God as our Father, we belong to him. Though we may seem lowly in the world, from heaven’s perspective we are his children. So consider your life carefully. Are your decisions reflecting that reality? Are you thinking and acting in line with what God has said? Ask God for wisdom, open his word, and walk in obedience. Live in a way that matches your calling as a child of the King.
