Proverbs 16:20-22 (ESV)
20 Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good,
and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.
21 The wise of heart is called discerning,
and sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness.
22 Good sense is a fountain of life to him who has it,
but the instruction of fools is folly.
A wise woman pays careful attention to God’s Word because she knows it is the source of true wisdom. Solomon writes, “Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good.” The phrase “gives thought” means to pay careful attention or to act wisely toward what God has said. Before we can impart wisdom to others, we must first humbly receive it ourselves. Those who regularly study God’s Word, trust its promises, and put its truth into practice experience the goodness of walking in God’s ways.
Solomon then adds, “Blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.” Wisdom is always more than acquiring biblical knowledge. It is trusting what God has revealed enough to obey him. The wise woman does not allow her emotions to direct her steps. She does not shrink back from following Christ when obedience is costly, nor does she chase after the empty promises of the world. Instead, she confidently entrusts herself to the Lord, knowing that his wisdom is always perfect and his plans are always good.
This inward trust transforms the words that come from her mouth. Solomon writes, “The wise of heart is called discerning, and sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness.” She is not impulsive or careless with what she says but thinks carefully before she speaks. Her words are appropriate for the moment. Like Jesus, whose gracious words amazed those who heard him (Luke 4:22), she speaks the truth with kindness, knowing that gentle, wise speech is often far more persuasive than harsh or abrasive words.
Solomon also says that “good sense is a fountain of life to him who has it.” Wise counsel refreshes, strengthens, and guides those who receive it, much like a spring of cool water satisfies a thirsty traveler. Ultimately, Jesus is the source of living water (John 4:14), and as we faithfully pass on his truth, he graciously uses our words to encourage others and point them toward life in him. In contrast, “the instruction of fools is folly,” for those who reject God’s wisdom have nothing of lasting value to offer.
God has placed people in your life who need wise, biblical counsel. As you give careful attention to his Word, trust him wholeheartedly, and speak with both truth and grace, God can use your words to influence others for their good and his glory. But never forget that your life must match your message, so that both your words and your example become a fountain of life to those around you.
