Proverbs 18:12-13 (ESV)
12 Before destruction a man’s heart is haughty,
but humility comes before honor.
13 If one gives an answer before he hears,
it is his folly and shame.
Pride and humility lead in opposite directions. Solomon warns that a haughty heart always walks toward destruction, while humility prepares the way for honor. The proud woman resists correction because she believes she already knows what is best. Confident in her own judgment, she dismisses wise counsel and gradually walks toward ruin. The humble woman, however, gladly receives instruction because she knows she still has much to learn.
Throughout Scripture, God delights in exalting the humble. Jesus, though fully God, willingly took on human flesh and humbled himself in perfect obedience, even to death on a Roman cross, the most shameful form of execution in the ancient world. Because of his humility, the Father highly exalted him (Philippians 2:5-10). As Jesus demonstrated, the path to true honor is not self promotion but humble submission to God.
Solomon then applies this humility to our conversations. The fool answers before she has fully listened. She interrupts, assumes she already knows the facts, and quickly offers her opinion. Rather than seeking understanding, she is eager to make herself heard. In the end, her rash words expose the very foolishness she was trying to hide.
Think back over your conversations this week. Have you truly listened, or were you simply waiting for your turn to speak? Humility listens because it genuinely wants to understand. Pride interrupts because it is more interested in expressing its own opinions than hearing anyone else’s. Sometimes pride simply wants to hear itself talk.
The next time you find yourself in a conversation, resist the urge to speak first. Listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, and seek to understand before offering your opinion. The woman who is eager to learn will grow in wisdom. The woman who is eager only to speak will reveal her folly.
