Proverbs 17:16-17 (ESV)

16 Why should a fool have money in his hand to buy wisdom

when he has no sense?

17 A friend loves at all times,

and a brother is born for adversity.

Solomon paints an almost humorous picture. Imagine a fool arriving with a purse full of money, hoping to purchase wisdom as though it were for sale. The problem is not that she lacks the resources to obtain wisdom but that she lacks the understanding to receive it God’s way. Wisdom cannot be purchased or earned. It is given to those who humble themselves before the Lord, listen to his instruction, and walk in obedience. As Isaiah proclaimed, God’s invitation is freely offered to all who thirst for him (Isaiah 55:1-2).

The fool’s mistake reaches beyond wisdom. Some people imagine that everything has a price. Wisdom cannot be bought. Love cannot be bought. Salvation cannot be bought. These are gifts God freely gives to those who come to him in faith. The fool refuses this gracious offer because she wants God’s blessings without submitting to God’s rule. She seeks the benefits of wisdom while rejecting the fear of the Lord, where wisdom begins.

Solomon then turns from the fool to the faithful friend. “A friend loves at all times.” A true friend does not love only when life is easy. She remains present in both joy and sorrow, rejoicing with those who rejoice and weeping with those who weep (Romans 12:15). Her love remains steady because her concern is not for herself but for the good of another.

The proverb adds, “A brother is born for adversity.” The Hebrew word tsarah, translated “adversity,” refers to times of distress, affliction, or severe trouble. During such seasons, God often cares for us through family and faithful friends. They bear our burdens, encourage us, speak truth when we need to hear it, and remind us that we are not alone. Hard times have a way of revealing who our truest friends really are.

A true friend remains faithful even when suffering comes. Hardship does not drive her away but gives her another opportunity to love. The friend of Jesus has been forgiven an unpayable debt and welcomed into fellowship with the King of the universe, though she did nothing to earn such grace. This godly woman will extend that same grace to others, standing by her friends through every season of life and reflecting the steadfast love of Christ.
