Proverbs 20:7–8 (ESV)
7 The righteous who walks in his integrity,
blessed are his children after him!
8 A king who sits on the throne of judgment
winnows all evil with his eyes.
The righteous woman walks in integrity. She is not perfect, but she is devoted to the Lord and faithfully orders her life according to his Word. Her private life matches her public profession, and her character is marked by honesty, dependability, and consistency. Rather than living for herself, she seeks the good of others, becoming a blessing to both her family and her community.
Solomon then points to one of the greatest earthly rewards of such a life. “Blessed are his children after him!” A godly parent cannot guarantee the salvation of her children, but she can leave them an invaluable inheritance. Children raised in a home where God’s Word is loved and obeyed enjoy blessings that money can never buy. They witness the beauty of a life lived in the fear of the Lord and reap the lasting benefits of a parent’s faithful example.
The second proverb shifts from the home to the throne room. A righteous king is entrusted with the responsibility of administering justice. As God’s appointed ruler, he carefully examines those who come before him, discerning what is evil and what is right. Nothing escapes his notice. Like a farmer winnowing grain to separate the wheat from the chaff, he removes evil from his kingdom so that justice may prevail.
Whether or not we ever hold positions of authority, all of God’s people are called to love righteousness. Are you walking in integrity when no one else is watching? What kind of legacy are you leaving behind? Your children, grandchildren, friends, and fellow believers are all influenced by the example of your daily walk. Live in such a way that your life points them toward Christ.
One day, every heart will stand before the perfect King. Unlike every earthly ruler, nothing escapes his notice. He sees every motive, every thought, and every deed. The good news is that all who have trusted in Christ will stand before him clothed, not in their own righteousness, but in his. If you are in Christ, live each day in joyful obedience, knowing that the King who knows you completely has chosen to love you, save you, and make you his own.
