Proverbs 8:27-28 (ESV)

27 When he established the heavens, I was there;

when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,

28 when he made firm the skies above,

when he established the fountains of the deep,

Wisdom continues to describe what she witnessed at creation. She moves from the forming of the earth to the establishing of the heavens. When God set the sun, the moon, the stars, and all the vast expanse of the universe in place, wisdom was there. As we consider the size and scope of the cosmos, we should be humbled. We are small in comparison, yet not insignificant. The same wisdom that was present at creation now calls out to guide us.

She was there “when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,” marking the boundary between sea and sky. Job 26:10 says, “He has inscribed a circle on the face of the waters at the boundary between light and darkness.” God set limits to his creation, separating and ordering it with precision. Wisdom witnessed this. She understands boundaries, order, and design. She knows how life is meant to function.

She was also present “when he made firm the skies above” and “established the fountains of the deep.” God placed water above in the clouds and below in the earth, sustaining life from both directions. What seems ordinary to us is actually the careful provision of a wise Creator. Wisdom was there as God arranged it all, seeing firsthand how the world was formed and upheld.

If wisdom was present at the foundation of the universe, then she is a rightful authority for our lives. We speak and think from limited understanding, but wisdom speaks from what she has seen from the beginning. To reject her is to trust our own small perspective over the perfect ordering of God. That is not only unwise, it is foolish.

Be honest with yourself. Where do you assume you know better than God? Maybe you read about the consequences of sin and judgment and think you could come up with a better plan. Maybe you see God’s call to holiness and assume some sins are not that serious. Maybe you hear his call to love and serve and think that if you lived that way, there would be nothing left for you. What truths in Scripture do you quietly resist because they do not align with your thinking? If we want to navigate life rightly, we must follow the way of wisdom. Humble yourself before God today. Open his word, receive what he says, and submit to it. The wisdom that was present when the world was made is the same wisdom that will guide you faithfully now.
