Proverbs 10:7-9 (ESV)

The memory of the righteous is a blessing,

but the name of the wicked will rot.

The wise of heart will receive commandments,

but a babbling fool will come to ruin.

Whoever walks in integrity walks securely,

but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.

The memory of the righteous is a blessing because a godly person’s character impacts others for good. Their reputation brings gratitude, encouragement, and provides the example of a wise life for others to imitate. The wicked leave a very different legacy. Their name decays. The memory of their life is shameful and eventually forgotten. One life leaves a pleasant fragrance. The other leaves rot. The wicked leave this life with a reputation that stinks.

Verse 8 turns from reputation after death to posture during life. The wise of heart receive commandments. They welcome instruction because they know they need help. They understand that left to themselves they would wander from God’s ways. So they humbly and eagerly submit to the Lord who made them and therefore knows what is best. Wisdom is not pretending to know everything. Wisdom is gladly receiving truth from God, even when it comes through others.

In contrast, the babbling fool refuses correction. Her lips are always moving, but her heart is never learning. She has an answer for everything, an excuse for every failure, and no desire to change. She values her own opinions above God’s word. The fool is revealed not merely by talking much, but by refusing to listen when truth is offered. She quickly defends herself in conversation, dismisses counsel from a friend, and explains away conviction from Scripture because protecting pride matters more to her than gaining wisdom.

Proverbs often pictures the journey of life as being on a path. Whoever walks on that path in integrity walks securely. This person lives in honesty and freedom before God and man. She has no need to constantly manage appearances or cover hidden sin. There is steadiness and safety in a clean conscience. But the one who makes her ways crooked will be found out. She may hide her sin for a season, but it never remains buried forever. What is twisted eventually comes into the light.

Have you ever been around a person who will not stop talking long enough to listen to reason? Even when she is quiet, she hears nothing but her own voice. She is the person who will come to ruin. The fruit of her actions will eventually expose the woman who deviates from truth, but the one on the path of righteousness travels through life in spiritual safety. Accept good and godly advice, agreeing that you still have more to learn. Do not be the one who always must be right, but instead display wisdom through a willingness to receive input and instruction.
