Proverbs 13:15-17 (ESV)

15 Good sense wins favor,
but the way of the treacherous is their ruin.
16 In everything the prudent acts with knowledge,
but a fool flaunts his folly.
17 A wicked messenger falls into trouble,
but a faithful envoy brings healing.

“Good sense wins favor.” The phrase “good sense” refers to moral clarity, discernment, and wise judgment. The woman who follows through on commitments, manages her responsibilities faithfully, handles conflict gently, and speaks graciously will often gain the respect of others. Even better, the one who hears and obeys God’s wisdom finds favor with the Lord himself. But “the way of the treacherous is their ruin.” Treacherous people are disloyal and deceptive. The one who rejects God’s wisdom is willfully choosing a hard and painful life. Sin promises freedom but slowly produces destruction.

Next, Solomon writes, “In everything the prudent acts with knowledge, but a fool flaunts his folly.” The prudent woman is thoughtful and discerning. She sees danger ahead and responds wisely. She does not recklessly place herself in compromising situations and then presume upon God’s protection. 2 Corinthians 2:11 warns believers not to be outwitted by Satan’s schemes. The wise person understands that temptation often begins long before visible sin itself. She thinks ahead and carefully guards her heart and mind before giving way to actions she will later regret.

The fool, however, “flaunts his folly.” The Hebrew verb translated “flaunts” is paras, meaning to spread out, unfold, or openly display something. Foolish people parade their lack of wisdom. They carelessly expose their immaturity through impulsive speech, uncontrolled emotions, reckless decisions, and a lack of self control. The fool blurts out every frustration, broadcasts every annoyance, and reacts without restraint. Instead of concealing her folly, she puts it on display for all to see.

“A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings healing.” In the ancient world, messengers were expected to communicate truthfully and accurately on behalf of the one who sent them. 2Samuel 1:14-15 records the account of the messenger who brought news of Saul’s death to David. Hoping to make himself appear heroic, he twisted the story to gain favor, but his deception ultimately brought judgment upon himself. Wicked messengers create confusion, division, and destruction because they fail to represent others honestly.

In contrast, “a faithful envoy brings healing.” Whether speaking on behalf of a husband, a friend, a boss, a church, or the Lord himself, faithful communication brings clarity and healing rather than confusion and harm. Do you make your boss, your husband, your church, and ultimately the Lord look honorable through the way you speak? Or do you regularly grumble about those in authority over you? How would you feel if every word you spoke yesterday were replayed before the people you represent? Would your speech reveal you to be a source of healing or a channel of destruction?
