Proverbs 16:3-5 (ESV)

3 Commit your work to the Lord,

and your plans will be established.

4 The LORD has made everything for its purpose,

even the wicked for the day of trouble.

5 Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the LORD;

be assured, he will not go unpunished.

Because God is sovereign over all things, Solomon calls us to “commit your work to the Lord.” The Hebrew verb galalliterally means “to roll.” It pictures rolling a heavy burden off yourself and placing it onto another. Rather than carrying the weight of our plans, responsibilities, and anxieties, we are to roll them onto the Lord, trusting him completely. This imagery is echoed in 1 Peter 5:7, where believers are told to cast all their anxieties upon God because he cares for them. We faithfully labor, but we leave the outcome in his hands.

When we entrust our work to the Lord, “your plans will be established.” This does not mean God guarantees every plan we make will succeed exactly as we envision. Rather, as we submit our desires to him, he directs and firmly establishes what he purposes to accomplish. We are responsible to work diligently and walk in obedience, but God alone gives lasting success. Even when his plans differ from ours, we can rest without fear because his wisdom is always perfect.

Solomon then broadens our perspective even further: “The Lord has made everything for its purpose.” Nothing exists outside of God’s sovereign rule. There are no accidents, no surprises, and no rogue molecules in his universe. He declares, “I work, and who can turn it back?” (Isaiah 43:13). Job likewise confessed, “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted” (Job 42:2). Even “the wicked” are not outside his control. Though they proudly oppose God and reject his design, they will ultimately face his righteous judgment. God’s justice may seem delayed, but it is never absent.

Finally, Solomon warns that “everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord.” Pride is not merely an unpleasant character trait. It is a heart attitude that exalts self above God and refuses to submit to his authority. The proud believe they know better than their Creator and live independently of him. Yet Solomon gives a solemn assurance: “he will not go unpunished.” No one ultimately escapes God’s perfect justice. The God who governs history also judges every human heart with complete righteousness.

What burden are you carrying today? Instead of gripping it tightly, roll it onto the Lord. Entrust your plans, your work, your disappointments, your hopes and your future to the God who rules over all things. The wise woman labors faithfully but rests confidently, knowing her life is in the hands of a wise and loving God whose purposes can and will never fail.
