Proverbs 19:22-24 (ESV)

22 What is desired in a man is steadfast love,

and a poor man is better than a liar.

23 The fear of the Lord leads to life,

and whoever has it rests satisfied;

he will not be visited by harm.

24 The sluggard buries his hand in the dish

and will not even bring it back to his mouth.

We all hope to find someone who will be there for us in our time of need. How devastating it is when the one we trust lies to us! Better to embrace poverty than to misplace our trust in those who will only let us down. But those who fear the Lord will never be disappointed. In the end, the wise disciple will not suffer hunger or calamity. In contrast to the godly, the sluggard has no fear of God. She is so lazy that even when she puts her hand into her plate, she decides it’s too much work to bring the food back to her mouth. Though opportunities abound, she would rather starve than exercise self-discipline. Are you a sluggard? What about in spiritual matters? Do you do what God has called you to and quickly? Or do you sit around stumped, too lazy to make the changes you should have made yesterday?
