Proverbs 19:10-12 (ESV)
10 It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury,
much less for a slave to rule over princes.
11 Good sense makes one slow to anger,
and it is his glory to overlook an offense.
12 A king’s wrath is like the growling of a lion,
but his favor is like dew on the grass.
When the fool experiences God’s goodness, she is driven further from the Lord, thinking the blessings he enjoys are a result of her own smart choices. Abandoning justice, an unwise slave would use power allotted to him for selfish purposes. And the fury of a king can go unrestrained. But the godly woman turns from anger, looking beyond her own rights. She reflects the character of the Lord, who has pardoned her sin by punishing his Son on the cross in her place. It is wise to seek a ruler’s (or a boss’s) favor by living above reproach. Good standing with those in positions of authority provides rest from strife. Every person will be wronged in this life. What do you do when hurt by others? Are you quick to overlook the offense, mindful of the wrongs you have been forgiven, or do you harbor resentment? To keep oneself from unwise anger is glorious.
