Proverbs 22:9-11 (ESV)

Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed,

for he shares his bread with the poor.

10 Drive out a scoffer, and strife will go out,

and quarreling and abuse will cease.

11 He who loves purity of heart,

and whose speech is gracious, will have the king as his friend.

The generous woman shares her resources with those less fortunate. Even the food she has allotted to herself and her family is further divided to help the poor. Though she may not be wealthy, she still gives to others without expecting anything in return. The unrepentant mocker must be banished to protect the integrity of the community. The person who is right with the Lord, evidenced by selfless and kind speech, has access to the ear of the king. The wise person is able to rule her tongue. She is trustworthy, honest, gives good advice, and keeps from damaging others with careless and harmful words. Although it’s been said that only “sticks and stones break bones,” the Proverbs repeatedly warn that words can and do hurt, often causing long-term suffering. If you have been foolish with your speech, repent today, and ask the Lord to help you carefully monitor what comes from your mouth.
