Proverbs 23:22-23 (ESV)
22 Listen to your father who gave you life,
and do not despise your mother when she is old.
23 Buy truth, and do not sell it;
buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.
The wise son of Saying 17 will humbly take advice from both parents throughout the duration of his life.Although the son’s relationship with his mother and father will change as he transitions from a dependent child to an independent adult, he should respect his parents and adhere to the godly wisdom they impart to him. From birth, when the father gives him life, to later days, when his mother is old, the righteous son treats his parents with deferential honor. The wise son will do whatever he can to extract as much wisdom as possible from his upright family, and he will never compromise truth, no matter how appealing the offer. Whether the opportunity involves finances, power, or indulgence, there is nothing more valuable than the wisdom that leads a godly person along the path of the righteous. No short-term pleasure is worth the high price tag associated with sin and disobedience.
