Proverbs 21:24-26 (ESV)

24 “Scoffer” is the name of the arrogant, haughty man

who acts with arrogant pride.

25 The desire of the sluggard kills him,

for his hands refuse to labor.

26 All day long he craves and craves,

but the righteous gives and does not hold back.

The one who mocks is saturated with pride. Her over-inflated opinion of self causes her to resist and lash out against God and others. She believes she knows more than God and would never be found seeking the counsel of his word. Although the sluggard wants material goods, she is too lazy to work. The desire for food and resources, which drives the normal person to labor and self- sacrifice, frustrates the lazy woman, and she lives with unmet longings. Everything the sluggard ends up getting is spent on herself. The righteous woman stands in contrast to the lazy. The upright woman seeks to meet the desires of others, and will be blessed herself. The arrogant woman has no desire for the Lord, looking down on those who acknowledge their need for salvation. Do you admit you need God’s help? Or are you self-righteous, trusting your own works will be sufficient when you stand before his throne?
