Proverbs 26:13-14 (ESV)

13 The sluggard says, “There is a lion in the road!

There is a lion in the streets!”

14 As a door turns on its hinges,

so does a sluggard on his bed.

Can you imagine someone saying she couldn’t get out of bed to go to work because a lion crouched in the driveway or the nearest intersection? The idle person is an expert in fabricating ridiculous claims to justify her laziness. She’s able to continually come up with excuses for not doing as she should, postponing her obligations until a supposedly more favorable time. A door swings back and forth without making any actual progress because it’s attached to its hinges, and so the sluggard turns back and forth on her bed, never making progress because she’s attached to the comforts of home. Laziness results in wasted life. We can believe we work hard and could never be accused of laziness, yet we may continually procrastinate when it comes to spiritual disciplines, such as Bible reading or prayer. Do you think the Lord sees you as a spiritual sluggard? If so, get off the couch today.
