Proverbs 26:11-12 (ESV)
11 Like a dog that returns to his vomit
is a fool who repeats his folly.
12 Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes?
There is more hope for a fool than for him.
Although dogs were domesticated in the ancient Near East, they were generally considered unclean animals because of their often repulsive practices. Those who have owned a dog know how disgusting it is to watch their pet choke up its own food and spit it out, only to re-consume it. The process is gross. Equally nauseating is the fool who doesn’t learn from her mistakes. From heaven’s perspective, when she repeats her sinful behavior over and over, she acts like the dog. But there is still hope for the fool. In fact, it’s better to be one who returns to her vomit than to be unteachable. The fool still retains some potential to learn from her mistakes. What about you? Are there sinful habits you keep returning to again and again? If so, ask the Lord to help you gain victory over your ungodly desires. Pray that God would reveal to your soul what things look like from his perspective.
