Proverbs 26:8-10 (ESV)
8 Like one who binds the stone in the sling
is one who gives honor to a fool.
9 Like a thorn that goes up into the hand of a drunkard
is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
10 Like an archer who wounds everyone
is one who hires a passing fool or drunkard.
The sling was made from a long strip of leather with a wide middle to hold a stone. When properly thrown, the stone traveled long distances and became a very effective offense or defense. This weapon would be useless if the rock was attached or bound to the sling. As absurd as binding a stone in a sling is giving honor to a fool. Gracing the fool with authority could damage the entire community. An intoxicated person may wave a thorn bush around, looking for a fight, and in the same way, words of wisdom, taken out of context and misused by the fool, are spiritually dangerous. The fool is also incompetent when it comes to work. The one who puts confidence in a fool or a drunk is as unwise as someone who haphazardly shoots arrows without taking aim. A lot of people may end up hurt as a result. Resist any desire to place your hope in a foolish person.
