Proverbs 25:1-3 (ESV)

1 These also are proverbs of Solomon which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied.

It is the glory of God to conceal things,

but the glory of kings is to search things out.

As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth,

so the heart of kings is unsearchable.

Hezekiah’s copyists transposed the sayings of Solomon from extant scrolls to new documents, often arranging the material by subject. As a king is above his people, so God is above the king. There are things the king will never know about God, and things the citizens of a realm will never know about the king. However, those whom God establishes as leaders do their job rightly by investigating matters, working hard to discover truth. Those who rule need not reveal everything they unearth to their subjects, but a good leader is diligent to observe the affairs of her people, engaging with and thinking through the dilemmas of those in her realm.Whom are you in leadership over? Do you research the controversies brewing and assessments made? Though it requires self- sacrifice and even the risk of misunderstanding, the good leader manages those underneath her with patience, thoughtfulness, and care.
